A bull elk sent a man flying after charging him at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, days after officials warned of mating-season danger. Video captured the moment a bull elk slammed into a man near the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, lifting him off the ground and dumping him in the grass as bystanders blasted their car horns to drive the animal off. Daily Mail reported the clash happened on a Saturday on the north side of the park, after the elk chased the man around a tree. The man slipped, fell, and took the full force of the headbutt. His identity and injuries were not released. The timing made the episode hard to shrug off. Park officials had warned visitors about the rut just two days earlier. What biological process causes bull elk to be more aggressive during the fall months in the Great Smoky Mountains?
Elk shed their antlers at the start of the year and grow a new set under velvet. By August, they rub the velvet covering off. By the fall, they use these fresh antlers to spar and guard territory during the rut season, which makes them more likely to react instinctually to perceived threats.

What was the park's official response to rumors regarding the euthanasia of the bull elk involved in the incident?
After a Change.org petition gathered nearly 5,000 signatures claiming the elk was "marked for execution" for defending itself, Superintendent Charles Sellars released a statement shutting down the rumor. He clarified that the park had no plans to euthanize the elk.

What safety warnings and rules had park officials established prior to the bull elk charging the man?
Park officials had issued warnings about mating-season dangers just two days before the incident. The established rules required visitors to stay at least 25 yards away from elk, not to stop in the road, not to pull over for a better look, and never to feed the animals. Moving into an elk's space is a violation of federal law.

Why did the bull elk behave aggressively toward the man at Great Smoky Mountains National Park?
The incident occurred during the "rut" or mating season, which runs from early September into late October. During this time, bull elk become territorial and use their antlers to spar and guard ground. Superintendent Charles Sellars stated that elk are wild animals that act on instinct to defend their territory when they sense a threat.
