And that perspective is shaped by the forces that shaped who I am: my Judaism, the journey of my mother from communist Czechoslovakia, and the mundane life of a young kid growing up in the suburbs of a blue-collar, East Coast American city. An American childhood The late 1960s, when I gained awareness of the society around me, was still a deeply patriotic world in the suburbs. Yes, we saw the images on TV of Vietnam, and we had our moments.
