A man in his 30s died early Friday morning in downtown Los Angeles after his car veered off Upper Grand Avenue and fell about 50 feet to the street below, and police still don't know what caused him to leave the road. The single-vehicle crash happened around 2:30 a.m. as the driver headed northbound on Upper Grand Avenue, a stretch of roadway elevated high above Lower Grand Avenue in the heart of downtown LA. The car left the roadway, dropped an estimated 40 to 50 feet, and overturned on the street below, the New York Post reported . The driver, a Black male in his 30s, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, was the only person in the vehicle. No other cars were involved. Officials pronounced him dead at the scene. A witness heard the impact from a nearby ATM An unnamed woman standing at an ATM near the crash site described hearing the vehicle hit the pavement. She told reporters: "I was at the ATM and I heard something go 'boom,' and I said that sounds like a car that fell down here. And look, it was a car that fell down here. That's crazy." Asked whether she had ever seen a car fall from Upper Grand Avenue before, the witness answered bluntly: "H*** no." The vehicle, described as a black sedan, was heavily mangled. It came to rest overturned on its hood with severe front-end damage. Los Angeles Fire Department crews arrived on scene, inspected the wreckage, and placed a white sheet over the car. LAPD says the investigation remains open Police have not said what caused the driver to veer off the elevated roadway. Whether impairment played a role has not been determined. LAPD told The California Post that the investigation is ongoing, but the department has not released the driver's name or any additional details about the circumstances. Several basic questions remain unanswered. It is unclear whether barriers or guardrails lined the stretch of Upper Grand Avenue where the car departed the road. No information about the vehicle's make or model has been released. And no formal press release or incident report from either LAPD or LAFD has surfaced publicly. A 50-foot fall onto city pavement leaves little margin for survival. Whatever the investigation ultimately finds, a man is dead, and the people of Los Angeles deserve a clear accounting of whether the road itself played any part in it.
