The Navy is bringing home the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln after a punishing nine-month deployment. It has said nothing about the roughly 1,000 sailors across the three destroyers sent to protect it. The destroyers have been deployed with the USS Lincoln since late 2025, according to the U.S. Naval Institute, — surpassing the typical deployment length of seven months. The USS Benfold, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, suffered a complete generator failure on July 24 while sailing with the George Washington carrier strike group in the South China Sea. The roughly 300 sailors aboard spent the next four days without potable water, hot food, functioning toilets, or air conditioning aboard the nearly 10,000-ton warship, ABC News reported . After a nine-month deployment the U.S. Navy is bringing home the USS Lincoln, which has made headlines for its supply shortages and a mental health crisis onboard. It is unclear if the sailors on the ships that accompanied the Lincoln are also coming home. Navy officials at the Pentagon declined MS NOW's request for comment on whether the destroyers would also be coming back and declined to answer questions about conditions. The USS Benfold lost power from July 24 to July 28 and was towed to the Philippines where power was restored. During those four days, the ship lost its air conditioning, galleys, toilets and showers.
