More than 53,000 New York children are now homeschooled, triple the number from 15 years ago, as parents abandon a public system where most students in hundreds of schools can't pass basic math or reading exams. New York State recorded 53,905 homeschooled children in the 2025, 2026 school year, a figure that has more than tripled since 2009, 2010 and represents what state data show is the fastest-growing school sector in New York. In New York City alone, more than 14,000 children now learn at kitchen tables, in museums, and in parks instead of public school classrooms.
