Scientists digging in Egypt's southwestern desert have uncovered fossilized remains of five extinct shark species dating to the Late Cretaceous period, a find that includes the first fossil record of its kind for Egypt and the African continent. Archaeologists excavating phosphate beds in the Duwi Formation, a geological deposit laid down when sea levels ran between 320 and 850 feet higher than they stand today, pulled 14 fossilized shark teeth from what was once a warm, tropical marine environment. The discovery, published in the journal Cretaceous Research , represents a new assemblage of extinct lamniform sharks, an order that includes some of the most formidable predators ever to patrol the world's oceans. The find matters because it…Open

A 51-year-old British mother claims she snapped a photograph of a large black panther just feet from her front door, the third big-cat sighting in the region in barely a month. Clare Hodges was taking out her bins on the evening of August 18 in the Ryehill area of Northampton, a mid-sized city about 70 miles northwest of London, when she heard a noise behind her. She had her phone camera ready, neighbors had been leaving raw lamb in the street for a local fox, and Hodges had been trying for days to photograph the animal. She turned, expecting the fox, and instead captured an image of something far larger. The Daily Star reported that Hodges, a full-time carer for her autistic 11-year-old daughter, ran back inside her home and showed the…Open
