A corrections officer at Arizona’s Lewis prison was violently attacked and beaten for more than three minutes by an inmate, raising urgent questions about prison safety and leadership as assaults on staff continue to rise. On July 28, a video captured at the Morey Unit of the Lewis prison complex showed a corrections officer being “sucker-punched” and then subjected to a prolonged beating by inmate Martin Franco. The assault lasted approximately three minutes and 35 seconds, with no staff coming to the officer’s aid during the attack.
