More than 75,000 customers in northwest Indiana remained without electricity a full week after storms carrying 99-mph winds leveled trees and killed seven people, with the local utility warning that full restoration in hard-hit Gary may not come until August 25. The storms tore through the region beginning August 11, initially knocking out power to roughly 300,000 customers across northwest Indiana. By late afternoon on Wednesday, August 17, that number had dropped to about 75,000, but for the families still sitting in the dark, the progress felt painfully slow.
