A young American hiker died after a lightning strike on Sicily's Mount Etna, in an area authorities had already closed to visitors because of weeks of dangerous volcanic activity. The 29-year-old man from Kansas was climbing the volcano on Sunday evening when a powerful thunderstorm rolled across the slopes. He was struck in the Rocca Capra area at roughly 1,400 meters, about 4,600 feet, in exposed terrain that Italian authorities had placed off-limits due to prolonged eruptions, AP News reported . Emergency crews reached him by helicopter at approximately 8:00 p.m. local time and found him in cardiac arrest.
